It’s very hard to cut through the marketing clutter and differentiate between truth and fiction. There are several weight loss myths out there that have hindered people from losing weight and getting healthy. Read on to find out the top myths about weight loss.

Weight Loss Myth #1 – You don’t have to count calories

Counting calories is important because you have to create a caloric deficit to lose weight. Counting calories also ensures that you are eating enough. Starving yourself may result in some initial weight loss, but usually leads to weight gain and slow metabolism.

Calories add up quickly. People tend to underestimate the number of calories they eat and over value the amount of physical activity they get.

Weight Loss Myth #2 – You always have to eat breakfast right when you wake up

The truth is that most people are not hungry right when they get up. This myth comes from the belief that you have to jumpstart your metabolism by eating breakfast. While it is important to not skip breakfast, it’s okay to eat within the first two hours after waking up.

Weight Loss Myth #3 – Eating three square meals a day is best

If you eat three square meals a day, chances are you will end up being shaped like one. It’s best to focus on eating small meals every 2.5-3 hours while staying within your daily caloric total. Remember, it’s all about creating a deficit. You can still lose weight by eating three meals, but you are more prone to snacking and eating large portions.

Weight Loss Myth #4 – Carbohydrates make people fat

The fact of the matter is that carbohydrates are a very important part of a balanced diet. Low carb diets have demonized carbohydrates. Certain carbohydrates are better than others, and it is best to stick to complex carbs that keep you feeling full. Too many carbohydrates can make you fat, but so can too much of anything.
