The Cucumber is a member of the squash family and is low in calories, saturated fat and cholesterol. A cucumber offers a complex nutritional value contrary to what some may think.

Cucumbers contain no sodium, no fat and very few calories per serving. In a cup of sliced or chopped cucumbers there are about 15 calories and 3 grams of carbohydrates. There are also a number of vitamins and nutrients within each serving of cucumbers.

Fresh cucumbers, peeled and sliced, contain good sources of dietary fiber, potassium and even copper. In just one cup of cucumbers there is one gram of fiber and one gram of protein.  Cucumbers contain thiamin, Vitamin B6, folate, magnesium and phosphorous. There is even a healthy dose of vitamin C and vitamin K found in one serving of fresh cucumbers.

While cucumbers do not offer the nutritional value that fresh spinach or broccoli does, it is considered a healthy vegetable and good source of vitamins. Cucumbers are also considered to be a good antioxidant because of the amount of vitamin C. Antioxidants are helpful in removing free radicals and toxins from the digestive tract and other systems of the body.  Cucumbers supply the body with vitamin C which helps to boost the immune system and improve overall health through cell regeneration and growth.

With all of this in mind, cucumbers are good for you and should be included in your balanced diet.
