Are Pistachios Fattening?

Pistachio nuts are actually seeds from the Pistachio tree and are closely related to the Cashew. Pistachios are loved worldwide and eaten to the tune of 2.5 billion pounds.

So are pistachios fattening? Yes, to the tune of 57 grams of fat per cup. But it’s not as bad as it sounds. 50 of those grams are good fat while only 7 grams are saturated. There are also 715 calories in one cup of pistachios.

The good fat in pistachios are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. They actually lower cholesterol and help the heart function better. They are also full of potassium, thiamin, fiber, magnesium and vitamin B6.

Pistachios are good for you, but moderation is the key. Especially if you are trying to maintain a trim waistline. Experts recommend individuals eat no more than three pistachios per day for optimum health.

One ounce of pistachio nuts without the shells has 160 calories, 12.5 grams of fat, 1.5 of which is unsaturated, and eight grams of carbohydrates. A great way to enjoy the recommended three ounces of pistachios per day is by having two, 1.5 ounce servings twice per day as a snack. That way you are keeping the calories and fat down.

So while pistachios are fattening they cannot be put into the same category as other fattening foods such as burgers and pizza. Enjoy them in moderation and you will increase your health.
