Are Pretzels Fattening?

Pretzels are one of the most popular snack foods in the world, running a close second behind chips. Pretzels, when eaten in excess, can pack on the calories and consequently, add excess fat to your diet.

Pretzels are considered to be healthier for you than chips, but if eaten in large quantities can be fattening. The crunchy pretzel types are not as fattening as the soft pretzels dipped in butter and cheese sauce. These pretzels contain nearly 15 grams of fat per serving, as opposed to five grams of fat in the dry pretzels.

Pretzels are high in calories, compared to most nutritious snack foods and are not recommended on a low-fat, low-cal diet menu.

Soft pretzels are typically higher in fat and calories than regular pretzels. If ordering a soft pretzel from a restaurant or chain fast food outfit, ask for no salt or butter in order to keep the calorie content low. You can actually cut the calories in half by omitting the butter.

Splitting a soft pretzel with a friend is another way to cut calories. By eliminating the butter and salt, and splitting the pretzel in half, you can actually save yourself nearly 12 grams of fat and 200 calories.  This is a great way to watch your fat intake.
