Protein powders and shakes have long been a staple for athletes and bodybuilders. It has recently worked its way into the main stream and is used by people who are trying to lose weight and build lean muscle mass. Protein is the building block for muscle. Without it, our bodies would not be able to properly recover from exercise and physical activity.
Many people report that after drinking a protein shake or bar they experience a bowel movement. So does protein make you poop?
Yes and no. It’s really no different than other forms of food that make you poop too. People who drink protein shakes and bars often experience gastrointestinal issues such as bloating, gas, and even diarrhea. That can happen for a number of reasons such as the quality of the protein, the individual having a sensitivity to it, or their body has not yet gotten used to consuming protein shakes. Some protein powders do contain lactose, which can cause people with lactose intolerance to have an upset stomach.
Protein shakes and bars can be hard to digest for some people. And many folks do experience issues upon implementing protein in their diets. But once your body gets used to it, most people experience no issues at all. So does protein make you poop? It all just depends.
